1. Stay calm. Talk slowly and use reassuring tones.

  2. Don't handle the crisis alone. Call family, friends, or neighbours.

  3. Realize you may have trouble communicating with your loved one. Ask simple questions. Repeat them if necessary, using the same words each time.

  4. Don't take your loved one's actions or hurtful words personally.

  5. Say, "I'm here. I care. I want to help. How can I help you?"

  6. Don't say, "Snap out of it," "Get over it," or "Stop acting crazy."

  7. Professional support may be needed in an extremely crisis and it may be necessary to call 112, police and/or an ambulance. It is important to let your loved one know about this and how concerned you are. This is OK.
